[edit] IPID 4th Annual Conference 2009
The 2009 Annual Conference of the International Network for Postgraduate Students in the Area of ICT4D will be held at Royal Holloway, University of London on 11th and 12th September 2009, hosted by the ICT4D Collective and UNESCO Chair in ICT4D.
[edit] Conference format
In line with previous IPID events, the conference is intended to be informal. Its main purpose is twofold:
- To let postgraduate students present short papers about their research in a supportive environment where they can gain positive feedback from other participants;
- To provide an opportunity to discuss key themes of interest to ICT4D postgraduates. The conference organisers would be pleased to hear from potential participants about the themes they would like to have discussed.
[edit] Keynote Speakers
- Ken Banks: Ken Banks, founder of kiwanja.net, devotes himself to the application of mobile technology for positive social and environmental change in the developing world, and has spent the last 15 years working on projects in Africa. Recently, his research resulted in the development of FrontlineSMS, a field communication system designed to empower grassroots non-profit organisations. Ken graduated from Sussex University with honours in Social Anthropology with Development Studies, and was awarded a Stanford University Reuters Digital Vision Fellowship in 2006, and named a Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellow in 2008. Ken's work has been supported by the MacArthur Foundation and Open Society Institute, and he is the current recipient of a grant from the Hewlett Foundation.

[edit] Paper presentations and themed discussions
In order to maximise the number of presentations, each will be limited to a maximum of 15 minutes including questions. If more than 32 offers of papers are received, we will run parallel sessions.
It is envisaged that there will be 8 themed discussions on aspects of ICT4D research practice. These will run in parallel, so that smaller group interaction will be possible. Suggested themes include:
- Managing your supervisor
- Being multidisciplinary
- Combining theory and practice
- Writing ICT4D
- Working in partnership
We welcome other suggested topics for themed discussion.
[edit] Sponsorship
Participants affiliated with a Swedish University can apply for funding to gudrun.wicander@kau.se in support of their attendance. Application for funding closes at 15th of July. All applications are dealt with on a first come, first served-basis.
