The International Foundation for Science (IFS)
The International Foundation for Science (IFS) supports scientific capacity building in developing countries. It gives research grants and supporting services to young scientists at the beginning of their research careers. IFS was established as a non-governmental organisation in 1972, is funded by more than 15 donor organisations and has provided over 6,000 grants to researchers in 100 countries. IFS identifies promising young scientists from developing countries and supports them in their early careers to help them become established and recognised nationally and internationally. Grants are approved through a careful selection process, relying on a broad network of world-renowned scientists who assess the scientific and developmental value of all proposals. They provide suggestions and feedback to both successful and unsuccessful applicants.
Recognising that science and technology capacity has not evolved to the same extent in all developing countries, IFS is now focusing its support on scientists in countries still lacking a solid base for national science and technology training. Targeted activities and strategic partnerships with key organisations in the South are included in this approach. Research Fields Supported Grants and supporting services are provided for research projects in areas such as agriculture, animal health and production, forestry, aquatic resources, food science, natural products and water resources. Researchers from natural science and social science disciplines are encouraged to apply. Proposals must address biological, chemical, physical, sociocultural or economic research topics that are important for the conservation, production or renewable utilisation of biological or water resources.
Application forms are available from the IFS web: http://www.ifs.se Types of IFS Support:
• research grants (up to USD 12,000) for the purchase of equipment, expendable supplies, fieldwork activities, etc. - a grant can be renewed twice
• purchase and delivery of equipment on behalf of grantees
• promotion of scientific networks and links to other scientists
• access to literature searches for grantees
• travel support for grantees to present their work
• mentorship by senior scientists drawn from the IFS network of advisers
• IFS-organised scientific meetings, international workshops, and training courses
• an award scheme for grantees
Who Qualifies for IFS Support
An applicant for an IFS Research Grant must be a citizen of a developing country and at the beginning of his/her research career, preferably under 40 (special criteria for Chinese and Sub-Saharan African applicants - see the IFS web for details) and hold an MSc or have equivalent research experience. The research must be carried out at a national university, research institute or research-oriented NGO in a developing country in Africa, Asia/Pacific, or Latin America/Caribbean.
Exceptions:
• China: Chinese applicants must be under 30 years of age. Researchers from Hong Kong SAR are not eligible for support from IFS.
• Researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa are eligible for IFS support up to the age of 45, provided they have completed their highest academic degree (MSc, MA, PhD, Post-Doc or equivalent) in the previous 5 years.
• Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay: Applications are no longer accepted from these countries. Chile: Applications for 1st grants will be accepted from Chile only until 31 December 2008, after which time Chile will not be eligible for IFS support. However, Chilean scientists currently having an IFS grant, will be eligible to apply for renewal grants until 31 December, 2010.

Welcome to Digital Anthropology!
Want to know more about what is unique about virtual culture? the cultural significance of on-line social networks? how social relations are managed through mobile phones? what happens to power and identity in an interconnected world?
Welcome to Digital Anthropology!
Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University
This course examines the development and use of Internet and mobile telephony in different social and cultural contexts, from an anthropological perspective. Digital technology is treated as a cultural construct, the characteristics and impact of which are analyzed through anthropological theories of the interplay between technology and society. Ethnographies of Internet and mobile phone use in different parts of the world and in virtual environments are used to examine issues such as culture, power and identity. The course also examines relevant ethnographic research methods, exemplified through empirical case studies. Digital Anthropology is a full-time, advanced level course (7,5hp), with weekly lectures and seminars, an e-learning platform (Mondo) and hands-on project work. The language of instruction is English. The course starts on 25 August, with final examination on 29 September.
Application deadline: 15 May 2009
Application form: application directly through Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University. Guidelines and application form available at: http://www.socant.su.se/pub/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=6764&a=61578
General qualifications: To qualify for studies at the advanced level, you must have completed 40p/60hp or the equivalent within the faculty of Social Sciences and/or the Humanities, and have English B or equivalent.
The course is taught by Dr Paula Uimonen, specialized in Digital Anthropology and Transnational Anthropology. For more information, check www.socant.su.se or contact paula.uimonen@socant.su.se.
