Post-doc at WITS South Africa doing IS research, at a Business School?

Wits has a post-doctoral fellowship programme that provides for post-doctoral students to come to Wits to do research, on a tax-free stipend of R150 000 (about 10 000 pounds) plus medical insurance, per year.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH COMMITTEE POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

1. GENERAL

These Fellowships may be applied for at any time, subject to the availability of funds.

The value of each fellowship will be R135,000 per annum (tax free). A contribution of up to R8000 for travelling costs to Johannesburg will be considered. Medical insurance will also be included

2. ELIGIBILITY AND CONDITIONS

2.1. The URC Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended primarily for persons coming from outside the University, who have obtained a doctorate from another university in the past five years or who have reached an equivalent level of research or scholarship. Preference is given to those who have completed their PhD.

2.2. The University will not entertain an application from persons over the age of 35 years. Nor will a person who holds an academic post at another institution be considered.

2.3. The duration of the Fellowship, which is tenable only at the University of the Witwatersrand, is normally one year in the first instance. Applications for an extensions of the fellowship period will be considered if appropriate, but no Fellow will be supported for more than 2 years in total.

2.4. A Fellowship may be subvented by funds made available by the Host or Head of Host School

2.5. In order to satisfy the income tax regulations, the following stipulations must be observed: If the Fellow is required to do any teaching of students, by lecturing, seminars, demonstrating or whatever, he/she be separately paid for this activity from school funds and such earnings will be subject to income tax.

A Fellow's research programme would be expected to fall within the broad scope of the work of the host school. However, he/she may NOT be employed to address a specific issue or problem which is of concern to a particular company or industry, which has given funds to the school to find a solution to that problem.

3. METHOD OF APPLICATION

All applications must be submitted through the head of the host school at this University.

Applications should include:

o a full curriculum vitae;

o two referees' reports;

o an outline of a research proposal;

o a motivation from the member of staff wishing to host the grantee; this should include reference to projected outputs

o a written evaluation and statement of support for the application by the Head of the host School

Please note that, when planning dates for the visit, non-South Africans should allow sufficient time for compliance with the relevant Government employment regulations once an award has been made.
